Thousands of visitors are set to enjoy the Worcester Show, which is bringing a ’90s theme to this year’s event.

Organisers are inviting people to “to take a nostalgic trip down memory lane” during the event at Pitchcroft on Sunday.

More than 14 sections and 170 categories of community competitions will take place, from flowers and photography to handicrafts and culinary creations.

Katie Collier, vice chair of Worcester City Council’s communities committee said the event would be the “highlight of the summer” for the city.

Activities take place on the show site from 10:00 until 17:00 BST, with a community procession at 10:30.

The day will also feature colourful displays and traditional food from the Ukrainian Community Group while the Worcestershire England Filipino Association will be among other organisations sharing their culture and community pride on the day.

The BBC will also have two stages at the event, with the BBC Hereford & Worcester Main Stage offering a variety of musical styles to get the crowd dancing.

A second stage – the BBC Upload and BBC Introducing Stage – will have a more laid-back atmosphere, showcasing up-and-coming artists.

Ms Collier said: “The Worcester Show is always a highlight of the summer — a celebration of our city’s culture, creativity and community spirit.

“With the support of partners like BBC Hereford & Worcester and the return of the fantastic Worcester Mela, we’re proud to offer a day that truly has something for everyone.”

Green Councillor Tor Pingree will be leading Worcester Green Party’s annual ‘Walk and Talk’ to celebrate International Women’s Day on Saturday 8th March. The event will lead attendees through the city, stopping at sites linked to notable women residents of the city to relate stories of their lives, achievements and, sometimes, notoriety.

Tor said “I’m really pleased to be leading the walk this year. Although plenty of people know bits and pieces about the history of Worcester, women’s stories have generally been allowed to fade into the background. I want to help change that, as there are lots of fascinating female characters who have lived and worked in our city. I feel that it also links in well with the theme of International Women’s Day this year, which is ‘Accelerate Action’. Hopefully hearing about these women will inspire others to call out inequality and celebrate women’s successes.”

“Given that women’s rights are being rolled back in certain places in the world right now, for example, increasing restrictions on reproductive rights in the USA and extreme rules around women’s lives under the Taliban, it feels particularly important to mark the day this year.”

International Women’s Day was first celebrated in 1911. It aims to highlight women’s achievements and the progress made towards equality, but also to raise awareness of inequality, discrimination and how far there is still to go. The walk will start at 10am and will end at the Guildhall. There attendees will be invited to join further events during the afternoon that are being organised by Worcester Trades Union Council, including music, poetry and readings and workshops.

Hannah Cooper, City councillor and active member of the Bike Worcester community, has been recognised as one of Cycling UK’s Top 100 Women in Cycling for 2024. Her tireless work to improve cycling infrastructure and promote active travel has made her a prominent figure in Worcester’s efforts to create safer and more sustainable streets.

Community Advocacy and Leadership

Hannah is longstanding member of Worcester’s cycling community, helping Bike Worcester to advocate for better infrastructure and encourage more people to take up cycling. Her campaigns focus on addressing common challenges, such as unsafe roads, limited cycle lanes, and a lack of secure bike parking.

Hannah is often spotted on her dutch cargo bike, cycling for every day journeys, as well as with the Bike Bus for her children’s school. By running the bike bus, she not only promotes active travel among young people but also raises awareness about the need for safer routes for cyclists of all ages.

Promoting Change in Worcester

In her role as a councillor, Hannah has consistently highlighted the benefits of cycling as a practical and sustainable mode of transport in Council meetings and other functions. She played a vital role in ensuring Worcester’s first pump track was built in Battenhall Park, championed Bike Worcester’s accessibility campaign leading to removing cycling barriers and ensuring increased bike parking facilities across the city. Voices like Hannah’s are crucial to help improve infrastructure and lead to increased cycling rates in the City.

Recognition and Looking Ahead

Hannah’s inclusion in Cycling UK’s Top 100 Women in Cycling celebrates her dedication and impact. For her, the recognition is a chance to emphasise the importance of prioritising active travel in urban development.

“I’m honored to be part of a community that’s driving change,” she said recently. “Cycling isn’t just a personal passion—it’s a way to improve health, reduce congestion, and create a better city for everyone.”

Looking ahead, Hannah plans to continue campaigning for comprehensive cycling infrastructure improvements. Her work demonstrates how grassroots advocacy and public service can combine to promote positive change in local communities.

Hannah’s efforts, both through Bike Worcester and her council role, highlight the power of community-led action in making cities more sustainable and accessible for all.

GREEN-minded members of Worcester City Council have officially agreed to up their climate game.

Councillors met at a meeting of the full council on Tuesday (September 17) to agree to sign up to the UK100.

UK100 is a network of local government leaders focused on tackling the climate emergency by promoting rapid action across a spectrum of climate change mitigation and adaptation work.

Joining the network will enable the council to work directly with other council’s facing the same challenges and enable it to have direct access to climate research, campaigns, publications, innovative funding models and private sector expertise.

In order to join the UK100, group leaders need to sign the Net Zero pledge with its associated guidance. The Net Zero pledge entails committing to a 2030 target for council emissions and a target for 2045 for area-wide emissions.

The UK100 Net Zero Membership Pledge states: “We will continue to lead the UK’s response to climate change, acting sooner than the government’s goal by making substantial progress within the next decade to deliver Net Zero. We will use our experience and achievements to advocate to the UK government in order to accelerate the delivery of ambitious local climate action. With greater powers and funding, we would go further.

“We commit to do everything within our power and influence to rapidly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and work with our residents and businesses to bring our wider communities’ emissions in line with Net Zero as soon as possible.

“We pledge to understand our impact on climate change, prioritise where action needs to be taken and monitor progress towards our goals. We will reduce our emissions at source and limit the use of carbon offsets as part of the global effort to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

“We are closer to the people who live and work in our communities, so we have a better understanding of their needs. This means we can collaborate with them to build consensus for the solutions we need to transition to a Net Zero society that delivers multiple benefits and is fair, just and works for everyone.”

Councillors voted in favour of joining the UK100 and the matter will now be is taken to the environment committee for its consideration and to explore the process involved in proceeding with the application.

More information about opportunities afforded through membership can be found at www.uk100.org

PEOPLE living near Pitchcroft fear ‘traffic chaos’ as Worcester Show returns to the city after last month’s gridlock.

Barbourne residents have concerns about traffic after the A38 and neighbouring roads became gridlocked during last month’s Monster Truck Mayhem event.

However, Worcester City Council is working with traffic experts to ensure the roads run smoothly.

Councillor Karen Lewing said the congestion around the event was dire and there was no adequate traffic management plan or appropriate signage.

It has led Cllr Lewing to raise the issues with Worcestershire County Council ahead of the Worcester Show on Sunday, August 11.

“I do not think the truck event should have been held in the middle of Worcester,” she said.

“The traffic situation was particularly dire, with no adequate traffic management plan or appropriate signage.”

“Major roads were gridlocked, leading to secondary roads becoming congested.”

“This caused inconvenience for residents but also reduced access to emergency services.”

“One determined resident even took it upon herself to make a sign and try to direct traffic to alleviate the chaos.

“I have already raised these issues with the county council, urging them to ensure that drivers are properly directed away from residential areas to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“It is crucial that lessons are learned and that robust plans are put in place for future events.”

Cllr Lewing confirmed that First Worcester will increase its frequency during the Worcester Show to ensure everyone can regularly use its services on the day.

A Worcester City Council spokesperson said: “The city council is working with an expert event traffic management company and closely with Worcestershire County Council as the responsible Highways Authority to put a traffic management plan in place.

“The Worcester Show is a long-established event for the whole community, which is spread out throughout the day between 10am and 5pm.

“There will be no parking at Pitchcroft on the day of the Worcester Show (Sunday, August 11), and visitors are urged to use car parks available across the city.

“We urge people to consider using alternative travel options and arrive at the Show on foot, by bike, or by bus.

“Beryl Bikes are also offering 15 minutes and unlocking free from any journeys starting or ending at bays closest to Worcester Racecourse.”

The organiser of the Monster Truck Festival, David Bailey, blamed visitors for not listening to their pleas to use other car parks or public transport to get to the venue.

Five Worcester parks and green spaces have received a prestigious environmental award.

Gheluvelt Park, Fort Royal Park, Cripplegate Park, Riverside Park and Astwood Cemetery and Crematorium have all maintained their internationally-recognised Green Flag status.

The accolade is given in recognition of the high quality and environmental management of the public parks and green spaces.

Chair of Worcester City Council’s Environment Committee, Councillor Zoe Cookson, said: “We are delighted that five of our parks have been awarded Green Flag status once again.

“This is a tribute to the hard work of the City Council’s parks team.”

The council has been implementing a new national approach to parks and open spaces this year.

This included rewilding some areas of Fort Royal Park to boost biodiversity and allow for more animal habitats.

Furthermore, the team at Astwood Cemetery and Crematorium are using techniques that encourage wildflower growth across the entire site.

Kerry Castle, chair of the Friends of Fort Royal Park and Commandery Gardens, said: “I’m really proud of the work our volunteers are doing to keep this space nice and put on community events for Worcester.”

Vice-chair of the council’s Environment Committee, Councillor Karen Lewing, added: “I’m really pleased that the City Council is investing in our green open spaces.

“It’s recognition of the hard work of lots of people, particularly the community in the area.”

Run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, the award scheme receives its license from the Department for Housing, Communities and Local Government.

The scheme’s manager, Paul Todd MBE, said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in achieving the Green Flag Award.

“We know that staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that the spaces maintain the high standards of the Green Flag Award, everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.”
