A campaigner has called for a temporary crossing on City Walls road to be installed as a matter of urgency, following damage to the existing pedestrian crossing.
Clare Wratten, Green campaigner for Rainbow Hill and Fort Royal, has highlighted the risks that pedestrians are having to run while the pelican crossing on City Walls Road, which lies in the Fort Royal section of the division, is out of action. The lights at the end of Union Street were left badly damaged and inoperable after being struck by a driver in a car accident last week.
Clare said “Measures were put in place quickly to keep the traffic flowing, but nothing has been done for people trying to get across the road at that spot. It’s particularly dangerous for anyone who is not able to walk very fast and the Highways Department has a responsibility to keep pedestrians safe as well as motorists. It’s a busy stretch of road and cars are often going fairly fast between the roundabout and the junction with the A44. A temporary crossing needs to be put in place as soon as possible before someone gets injured.”
