Walk to School Week will take place this year 19th to 23rd May and a city councillor is helping a school in her ward to celebrate.
Arboretum ward city councillor Hannah Cooper has arranged for some of her ward funding to enable St George’s C of E primary school to purchase Walk to School Week resources which will help make the week fun, memorable and motivational.
With support from Hannah, who worked with them to increase the number of pupils who get there on foot, bike or scooter, they achieved a School Travel Plan with a rating of ‘good’. This was awarded by the Modeshift STARS accreditation scheme in September of last year. The school was the first in Worcestershire to achieve this and their activities around Walk to School Week will help them to build on their success. Each day of the week has a different focus; mental health, physical health, sustainability, road safety and community.
Hannah said “It’s a real pleasure to support St George’s C of E primary school with active travel. The children are so enthusiastic and I’m sure they will love this year’s challenge theme of ‘The Great Space Walk’. The data from the school’s hands-up survey records that 57% of children currently walk, cycle or scoot to school; however, 83% of children would like to use active travel to get there. I hope they all really enjoy Walk to School Week and that it inspires more to keep on walking and wheeling.”
