Old Elizabethans Cricket Club has new cycle parking area

A CRICKET club in the city has installed a new feature due to popular demand.

The Old Elizabethans Cricket Club has installed a new cycle parking area to accommodate the needs of its members.

The club, on Droitwich Road in Perdiswell Park, had noticed an increase in families coming along on bikes with their children, especially for the juniors’ training sessions on Friday evenings.

It also wanted to increase the number of people visiting it by bicycle, so Worcestershire County Councillor Matthew Jenkins helped plan to install a new cycle parking area.

Councillor Jenkins has used part of his divisional fund to help support the club’s project.

“I was keen to support the club,” he said.

“I haven’t played cricket for a long time, but I was happy to cycle to the club, park my bike in the new cycle parking area and watch some of the youngsters playing cricket.”

The dedicated cycle area uses bright-coloured Sheffield cycle stands to appeal to young riders.

Since its installation, it has proven to be popular.

The Old Elizabethans Cricket Club was formed in 1935 as the cricket section of the Worcester Royal Grammar School “Old Boys” network.

It had played on several grounds across the city before finding its permanent home in the north of the city.

The new cycle parking is just one of many changes the club has undergone to improve its facilities since.

In the mid-90s, it began designing and building a new pavilion with the aid of Lottery funding, and the ground has been constantly upgraded.

In 2001, the club opened its second ground, which is home to Perrywood Football Club during the winter months.
